Introduction
In order for children to properly learn in class, communication in the classroom is critical. Parents and teachers must cooperate. The parents should know what the teacher is teaching, as well as their teaching methods. You also want them to know that they can come to you about any questions regarding the class. The following communication tools are an effective way for teachers to communicate with students and parents throughout the school year, ensuring they get the full benefit from their education.
Technology to Enhance Communication
Classroom Website: The classroom website will be utilized as an introduction to subject matter, as well as the teacher. Throughout the year, the website will provide current information events, monthly calendars, weekly assignments, and study guides or testing information. A homework link is provided for students who may be absent, enabling them to obtain the assignments handed out that day. Contact information is provided for parents to contact the teacher whenever necessary.
Message Boards: The message board is a type of discussion group that is based online (Gunter & Gunter, 2014). These can be used for parents and teachers to discuss lessons and assignments for the class. If their child is struggling, they can connect with the teacher and parents to help their child better understand the material being taught in class. The parents could also discuss anything else class related, such as events, trips or projects.
ZOMNImail: A communication software that can be used in a variety of ways. ZOMNImail allows teachers to keep a daily record of progress, make notes and mark participation of each student in one location. Bulletins can be added to include daily homework and test assignments. At the end of the day, all the information can be submitted to a customized email form that is then sent to all the parents. The forms are easily formatted to fit your needs.
Email: Traditional email is a direct way communicate with parents. Email can be used as a great alternative, because many parents are too busy to have a conversation by phone. This may be used to discuss events in class or to give an update on how their child is performing. Emails can also be used to send parents progress reports and any other documents pertaining to class.
Communication Internet Security and Safety
The FBI has made cybercrime its number three threat priority (DeFranco, 2011) so internet security is more important than ever. Despite advanced web security technology, a security problem can still occur (Bullinger & Ziegler, 1999). Technology is always evolving, as are criminal’s methods for breaking into systems, so teachers must be vigilant in educating students and parents about the dangers of the internet and the importance of staying safe. Teachers should instruct students to never to give out personal information over the internet. Parents need to be proactive and set up firewalls to keep unwanted intruders out of their systems. Children do not always know what sites are acceptable, so to protect them from dangerous sites, filters can be set up (Gunter & Gunter, 2014)
Concluding Paragraph
Communication is the transfer of information from one person to another (Daniel, 2013). It is the foundation to connect parents, students, and teachers together under the goal of success. Technology enhancement has made communication much easier by combining multiple tasks into one place. This makes it easier for teachers to reach parents and students in less steps, saving time so they can create more in depth lesson plans for their students. Most of the tools listed can either be combined or used individually to enhance the students learning experience and improve communication between teachers and parents. As technology advances, so will the ways to communicate efficiently and effectively.
